This is the sort of entity where the only time you leave a review for them, is if you have something negative to say. I have had a professional relationship with the City of Cape Coral's building dept for several years and have been a cape coral resident for my entire life. For some reason, people are under the impression that this department is difficult to work with, un-organized, and slow. There is also a consensus that this department is difficult to get a permit through. I assure you that compared to other departments, this is NOT the case. Compared to other building departments, the City of Cape Coral is very easy to work with and generally very responsive. If you think the City of Cape Coral is difficult, then you must not have worked anywhere in Collier County or the City of Fort Myers. I will admit they have been known to be under-staffed but this is not the fault of the building department, as any new position or hire has to be approved by the City Council. It should be known however that if you do not regularly deal with the building department and you are pulling a permit, you're probably going to waste a lot of time going to the wrong places and eventually will be frustrated which is the case with ANY building department. If you're trying to pull a permit and you take what you think you need to the building department, stand in line for an hour, and then get sent somewhere else, thats not their fault. Its best to call the building department, ask what you need over the phone, and then ask them exactly where to go once you get there. These departments are set up for contractors who make up 98% of the people that go in there. Cape Coral also has a great eTrakit system that is by far head & shoulders better then any permit tracking system that other building departments use. This system is easy to navigate and allows you to find anything using a site address.
Very poor experiences with this building department. They can definitely utilize the online etrakkit system much better by allowing us to apply for permits online instead of wasting 3 hours to apply then another 3 hours almost 3 weeks later when it is ready to be picked up. Paying in full before your application is reviewed doesn't seem to make things happen any faster...
No one every answers the phone. You can not get a hold of anyone. We have called there office every 10 minutes for an hour and still no answer.
After purchase of home in Cape Coral and having a licensed inspector whom I hired, I bought the house. After a roof problem I called the city to check on the permit that was drawn when the roof was installed. I was told it did not pass inspection...HOWEVER, it was an owner job and the owner never called the city back to inspect it again and pass it. I was told by the city they do not follow up on failed inspections! I then had to hire a roofing company to come in and fix the problem area, which did turn out to be the same area the city failed when the roof was installed around 2007.Back in the early 2000's in another home I owned, I hired a roofer to install a complete roof and rear flat roof. The city inspector passed it. When I had someone look at the job, the nails were put in wrong and were popping out, the flat roof was wrong. I had it looked at by 3 roofers. Called the city and they said they were too busy to come out. I hired a private firm to inspect it and take pictures and make a report. I delivered it myself to the city - all 17 pages of it. They finally agreed it was a bad job and I had it torn off and a new roofer redo the job. I had to hire an attorney against the first roofer. This has been twice. I called the city twice now about this. The first answer was we do not police failed permits, and the second person tranferred my call to a voice mail. That was over 3 weeks ago and no response. What is the purpose of a permit if the city ignores a failed permit???? IF YOU ARE BUYING A HOUSE IN CAPE CORAL, CHECK THE BUILDING PERMITS THAT WERE DRAWN FOR THE ROOF, ANY NEW ADDITIONS LIKE A WATER HEATER, ETC. MAKE SURE THEY PASSED INSPECTIONS.
By far and away the worst municipal permitting department in SWFL. It seems to mostly take at least 45 minutes to 1 hour just to get your name called. Heaven forbid your application is missing anything. For the record, I don't think it's the folks that work out front. Someone higher level has created this mess but if you want to build in CC, be prepared to wait and wait and wait.
